Biography: Augustin Pajou grew up in Faubourg Saint-Antione, a modest area in Paris and was trained by his father who was a sculptor. He later worked in the studio of Jean-Baptiste Lemoyne. At the age of eighteen, he won first prize in sculpture at the Accademie Royale in Paris. He then won the Prix de Rome, an award that supported him financially while studying at the Academie de France in Rome. Pajou received several official commissions during the 1760’s including the decoration of the Salle de l’Opera at Versailles, the Palais-Royal, and the Palais de Justice. He spent the French Revolution completing a commission to conserve French monuments. Pajou spent several years in Montpellier to avoid the violence but fell ill upon his return and could not continue working. He was forced to leave his studio in the Louvre in 1806 and died three years later.
