Biography: Mattia Preti was originally born in Calabria in southern Italy. He traveled to Rome in 1630 to live with his brother Gregorio, who he studied with at the Accademia di San Luca. Preti’s early paintings were influenced by Caravaggio. From 1653 to 1660, he resided in Naples where his style reached its maturity, incorportating realism and chiaroscuro. Preti then moved the island of Malta and remained their for the duration of his life, receiving church and other commissions from across Europe.
