Biography: Marcantonio Raimondi studied with a Bologonese painter before moving to Venice in 1506 to become an unofficial copyist for Albrecht Durer. Durer successfully took legal action against Raimondi. He then moved to Rome in 1510 and founded an engraver’s school able to produce accurate replicas of artworks. Raimondi’s experience studying the work of master printmakers helped his talent develop, especially his system of hatching and highlighting. In 1513, he was devoted to engraving Raphael’s work until the artist died in 1520. Afterward, Raimondi engraved the work of the members of his circle, including Giulio Romano. He was briefly imprisoned for making erotic engravings after Romano’s designs. In the 1527 Sack of Rome, he was forced to ransom himself from the Spaniards and left the city.
