Biography: Raffaello Sanzio studied in Perugino before moving to Florence in 1504, to paint portraits and other commissions for his clients. In 1508, Pope Julius II summoned Raphael to Rome where he came in contact with Michelangelo. Raphael was accused of copying his ideas, but his pleasant disposition secured powerful allies. One of Raphael’s largest commissions were the papal apartments in the Vatican, where he created numerous frescoes, the most famous being The School of Athens. This project kept him busy for the rest of his life, although he had side projects such as designing tapestries for the Sistine Chapel, and creating frescoes for the banker, Agostino Chigi. Raphael’s promising career ended abruptly when died of a fever at the age of 37.
