Artist: Harmenz Van Rijn Rembrandt (1606 - 1669)
Nationality: Dutch
Movement: Baroque
Media: Painting
Influences:
Biography: Harmensz van Rijn Rembrandt studied under Pieter Lastman, and briefly shared studio space with Jan Lievens, both of whom influenced his early work. He then moved to Amsterdam in the 1630’s, and began a career as a portraitist, often showing his subjects in atypical scenes. In the 1640’s, Rembrandt began painting less portraits and more introspective and personal scenes of religion, his two wives, and himself. This work did not generate as much money or praise, and left Rembrandt in the shadows for the remainder of his life.
