Biography:
Cristoforo Roncalli was born in Pomarance in Tuscany and began his career by studying in Florence. He moved to Siena in 1575 and began receiving significant commissions for altarpieces and frescoes. Roncalli moved to Rome in 1580 working consistently painting frescoes with Biblical themes. He joined the Accademia di San Luca in 1588. Roncalli was influenced by Florentine Mannerism initially, but began incorporating Caravaggio-like light and shade by the mid 1590’s. Pope Clement VIII hired around 1600 to supervise decorative projects in St. Peter’s Basilica. In 1607, Roncalli received the highest title available for artists in the church, Cavaliere di Cristo
