Biography:
John Russell began his career as an apprentice to Francis Cotes before beginning his own studio in 1767. He was a skillful pastel painter who produced mostly portraits, although he created a few genre scenes. Russell was also interested in astronomy and produced oil and watercolor paintings of the moon. In 1780, he published “The Elements of Painting in Crayon,” an important publication for understanding the technique and materials. He also wrote a recipe book for pastel manufacturing. Russell joined the Royal Academy in 1788 and was appointed Crayon Painter to George III.
