Biography:
Jan van Scorel was began his training in Amsterdam in 1512 under the city’s first major painter. Five years later, he worked under Jan Gossaert in Utrecht and then Albrecht Durer in Germany. After visiting the Holy Land with a troupe of pilgrims, van Scorel returned to Rome and became the director of Vatican antiquities under Dutch pope, Handrian VI. He returned to Utrecht in 1524 and began painting some of the earliest group portraits. His workshop received many commissions and taught Antonis Mor.
