Biography:
Michael Sittow was the son of a painter who began his apprenticeship in Bruges in 1483. In 1492, he traveled to Spain to become court painter to Queen Isabella and was employed there until 1502, although he continued to work for her until her death in 1504. He then worked in the Netherlands and served the Danish court. In 1518, Sittow returned to his hometown of Tallinn. He specialized in small religious paintings and portraits influenced by illuminated manuscripts and Netherlandish paintings.
