Biography:
Adalbert Stifter was an Austrian painter and writer. Painting was his primary interest until around 1840, when he devoted himself to writing. He initially worked as a tutor and later as an educational administrator. He was a self-taught painter, mostly creating sentimental landscapes. His writing also focused on the events of daily life rather than dramatic stories. In 1859, Stifter’s adopted daughter committed suicide. He late life was darkened by so much depression and illness that he took his own life in 1868.
