Biography:
Theodor van Thulden studied under an Antwerp portrait painter before becoming a master in the city’s painter’s guild in 1626. He spent 1631 to 1633 in France and was inspired by Mannerism and the decorative work at Fontainebleau. He returned to Antwerp become increasingly influenced by Peter Paul Rubens. In 1635, he produced Rubens’s designs for the celebratory entry of Cardinal-Infante Ferdinand of Spain. In 1644, he returned to his birthplace but continued to receive significant commissions. He adopted a more classical approach to painting and produced religious works including engravings, stained glass windows, and altarpieces. He also painted mythological, historical, and literary themes in addition to portraits. From 1648 to 1651, he helped produce decorations for the Huis ten Bosch.
