Artist: Jacopo Tintoretto (1519 - 1594)
Nationality: Italian
Movement: Mannerism
Media: Painting
Influences:
Biography: Although Jacopo Tintoretto’s early training is unknown, it is believed that he was expelled from Titian’s studio after displaying more talent than his mentor. He collaborated with Andrea Schiavone before developing his own technique for time-efficient painting, often criticized for not finishing his works. Tintoretto’s main goal was the display his work so he painted frescoes for the cost of materials or sometimes for free. He spent most of his career in Venice except for a visit to Mantua around 1580. He painted primarily religious subjects although he produced some portraits and scenes of everyday life.
