Artist: Maurice Quentin De La Tour (1704 - 1788)
Nationality: French
Movement: Rococo
Media: Painting
Influences:
Biography: Maurice-Quentin Delatour ran away from home at the age of fifteen because his musician father did not approve of his desire to pursue a painting career. He first studied in Paris under a Flemish artist and then painted portraits in England. After returning to Paris, he began working with pastels. From 1738 to 1763, Delatour exhibited consistently at the Salon and also became a member of the Academie Royale in 1746. Four years later, he became portraitist to the king and was commissioned by the wealthy and powerful of Paris. He founded an art school and several charities later in his life, and spent his final years indoors due to mental illness.
